Leo Irakliotis holds a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Colorado State University and an MS in Theoretical Physics from Miami University.  Dr Irakliotis' scientific expertise is in the area of parallel computing architectures based on optoelectronic systems.  His designs of optical/electronic interfaces include VLSI chips and architectures for transferring data between electronic computers and optical memories.  Irakliotis is also interested in databases, datamining, and peta-byte scale non structured database organization, management, and processing.

Dr Irakliotis has substantial experience in the areas of corporate technical management, intellectual property law and IT patents, strategic planning and execution for IT infrastructure, and curriculum design and management for the broader IT field.

Prior to joining the University of Chicago Dr Irakliotis was an executive engineer with MCI Telecommunications and Concert, the MCI-British Telecom joint venture.

At the University of Chicago he is the associate chairman of the Computer Science Department and the director of the University's Professional Programs in Computer Science. His teaching interests are in the areas of databases, datamining, medical informatics, strategic technology planning, and corporation-wide integration of technology.
